This Sunday we are encouraging, as well as congratulating and pray for our loved ones who graduated from High School this year. There are also among us those who have graduated with advanced degrees, college degrees.
I am remind by the occasion of what Paul wrote to his graduating student, Timothy. Tim had advanced to a position of responsibility as a pastor. The particular verse is easy enough to remember because it has the same numbers as the important and well know verse John 3:16
Everyone should know and often recite John 3:16; “ For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
I pray that John 3;16 would enter the heart of every person and most especially live in every believer as a great comfort and challenge.
Second to it is another “3:16,” 2 timothy 3:16. Paul writes to his graduate saying, “ You,…, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me…the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of,… you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
All Scripture, the bible, is God-breathed, breathed out by the Holy Spirit. This places the bible in a unique position in the universe and our lives. It is the God given revelation of reality as He sees it, the only authentic reality. The bible breathed is the life giving breath of God; the Holy Spirit is intimately, organically and inseparably connected to the Bible.
Knowing this we read the bible. This morning we read particular Psalm 141 a psalm in which every word is a prayer. Make prayer, God breathed prayer from the Bible yours.
